For former Phi Sigma Phi big and little brothers Mark King and Brian Morris, the importance of charity did not end with
their graduation from Wright State and their fraternity.
On December 26th, King and Morris began the Barhorst Family Fund after Morris heard the news of a car
crash on the 23rd that injured four children and killed their parents in one car and killed a child and his
father in the other car.
“Somebody’s got to do something,” Morris remembers thinking. He posted this sentiment on Facebook
and after seeing several people ‘Like’ his status, he thought, “I guess I’ve got to do something.”
With that, Morris contacted King, and the two resumed their former Phi Sigma Phi relationship, working
together to create a donation link to a bank account and publicizing their efforts through Channels 2 and
7, the Dayton Daily News and several radio stations. By the 31st, they had already raised $10,000, and
currently have $13,295 and 272 donors.
The two are planning on cutting both families checks once the account has reached $15,000. From $2
to $1,000, donors across the nation have been doing what they can to contribute to the support of the
children who survived this crash.
The two proclaim that they have achieved what they have because of “Mark’s brains and Brian’s voice.”
Their next big event will be happening at Tuty’s on Super Bowl Sunday. On February 3rd, Tuty’s will be
donating half of all food sales to the Barhorst Family Fund, and King and Morris are planning on hosting
a 50/50 raffle.
“We didn’t do that much,” King humbly stated. “We planted a seed, and we gave people an outlet to
King, who shaves his head every year in support of the children’s cancer research, stated that he will be
doing the same at the event at Tuty’s by sporting a design during the day, and then shaving it off.
