The Lady Wright State Raiders looked for revenge in the Windy City against UIC and Loyola on the road trip and eventually went 1-1 in Chicago. The Raiders were defeated by the Flames 63-55 and were triumphant over Loyola, 66-60.
Against UIC, the Raiders played like they just recovered from third-degree burns from the Hot Flames. The last outing was a 68-46 scarring. The Raiders want to extract revenge on the Flames, but have a lot of work ahead of them.
UIC had won six straight heading into the game and the Raiders were on a three-game having not won a game since playing Detroit on Jan. 20.
The Flames started out hot, but the Raiders kept on the trail. After a Whitney Lewis lay-up, the Raiders had let the Flames soar out of control and lead 16-9 with 5:49 to play in the first half. The Flames blew out for a brief moment to call it half at 25-17.
The second half began in favor of the Lady Raiders, scoring the first nine points of the second half, but could not overcome the Flames defense to take the lead. After Wright State's explosive start the Flames took over again in route to their eight point victory and handing WSU their fourth straight loss.
After leaving the UIC Pavilion, the Raiders went cross-town to take on Loyola. Much like the Raiders Loyola has been on a downhill slide themselves, with an overall record of just 6-15.
But despite the poor play the Ramblers still found themselves one position ahead of Wright State in the league standings.
The Loyola Ladies owned the first seven points of the game, while holding the WSU scoreless until 17:28, when Tyanda Hammock broke loose and made a jump shot.
With a second straight Raider basket from Sierra Crayton, the Ramblers decided to leave the Raiders way behind. The Ramblers led by as much as 14 in the first half, but the Raiders roared back to snatch a 33-29 halftime lead.
The second half was a close match between the two struggling Horizon League teams, but Wright State kept Loyola at bay by holding up the lead. Although the Ramblers pulled to within a point or two of WSU they were never able to take back the lead.
Brittney Whiteside led the pack with 18 points, while Hammock chipped in a cool 17 points. Crayton was the only other Raider to sink double-digits in points, with 13.
The Raiders are now 6-16, 4-7 in Horizon League play and have a chance to capture their only sweep of the year as they take on Detroit on Thursday at 7:00 p.m. in the Nutter Center.
