The Wright State student group is organizing a benefit concert on Feb. 17 to raise funds for Miami valley literacy Council. The event will feature a live band performance by Elements, the top Dayton-based rock band at W.O. Wrights. The concert will begin at 9 p.m. and will go on till two in the morning.

As part of Professor Lisa Crawford's MGT 411 class, the students were instructed to reach out to any non-profit organization, group or association that needed help and resources to function efficiently. The aims of the course were to inculcate leadership and involve students in the larger community so a group of students chose to work with Miami valley Literacy Council because they needed adequate funds and resources to carry on their literacy campaign.

The Miami Valley Literacy Council is a nationally accredited literacy provider whose vision is to create a literate community. Working for 45 years, the MVLC helps adults, teens, children, and families to acquire reading, listening, speaking, writing, mathematical, and technical skills needed to survive in today's society. Apart from spreading literacy, the Council also aims at personal growth and self-sufficiency of individuals in the community. To achieve these goals, the Council is constantly in need of professional staffs and supporting volunteers who are dedicated to the cause of literacy. So when a team of Wright State students wanted to lend a helping hand, they were received with a warm welcome by the Council.

The students planned that they will raise a fund of $1000, collect 75 books and 20 book bags to strengthen the Council's mission. To make people aware of Miami Valley Literacy Council, the students distributed fliers within the university campus. "Since many of us are work-study students, we passed fliers at our jobs and asked people to donate their old and used books to the Council," said Kevin Trimbach, a senior in Business Management.

The team then decided to organize a benefit concert to raise the needed money for the Council. They approached the rock band Elements to perform in the concert. "We went to Elements because they are popular. We just had five weeks to plan for the concert. Luckily, one of the band members were very excited with our project and accepted the invitation spontaneously," added Kevin. "W.O. Wrights has been a great sponsor as well," said Melissa Eilerman, a Business management student. " I am very excited about the concert and hope that we get a good turn out to reach our target," she added. She feels that "although many students are not yet actively involved in the program, we hope that shining some light onto the issue will interest them to get involved and lend a helping hand." The students want more people to participate in their cause. "The concert is not the end. We want students to donate their used books, books they will not use in the future, to the council," said Kevin.

Indeed, the enthusiastic Business Management students are eagerly looking forward to the concert to spread the light of education in the larger community.
