Academic Analytics, a for-profit, private company, ranked WSU's faculty 4th in the nation for doctoral research productivity of all universities with 14 or fewer doctoral programs.

The ranking system is based on faculty publications, citations, and research money given to the university.

The ranking system does not necessarily measure the outcome of the faculty's research; it merely acknowledges that industrious activity is being accomplished.

Because of the faculty's accomplishments, WSU has been awarded grants from agencies, such as the National Institute of Health and the National Science Foundation, for significant research in the 5 doctoral programs, which include biomedical sciences, computer science and engineering, engineering, environmental sciences, and human factors and industrial/organizational psychology.

Receiving grants is one measure of productivity that qualifies WSU's doctoral programs to be ranked as 4th in the nation.

"This is the first time this group has published their ranking numbers; they are a company that asks the university to purchase data, as a matter of helping to engage faculty productivity," said Jay Thomas, Vice President for Research and Dean of the School of Graduate Studies.

No other private company has ever attempted to rank universities in such a way, Thomas added.

Although this ranking is purely based on faculty, it reflects on the students.

"The graduate students here collaborate well with the surrounding environment," said Thomas. For instance, the engineering and computer science graduate students have access to research labs in the Wright-Patt Air Force Base.

Likewise, biomedical science grad students have access to cutting-edge healthcare research at the hospitals in the area.

"One reason I chose to go to Wright State is because the professors here are doing pretty cool research in engineering, a lot of it's defense-related at the base," said engineering graduate student Ryan Fogle.

"It shows we have strong faculty that will be able to guide students in their studies," said Thomas. "We have a solid doctoral education at WSU."
