A law that requires people to have a passport in order to enter Canada and Mexico was recently implemented by the U.S. government as a means of increasing security.
According to Jeanne Ballentine, a professor of Sociology at Wright State, this will not only mean changes for our country's security, but also for those who like to do a lot of traveling.
The new law will make traveling more difficult then it used to be because any places that are not U.S. territories now require a passport. This means that people will have to obtain and renew their passport more frequently.
Passports can be obtained at county court houses, post office or online and must be renewed every 10 years. If a person applies for a passport online they must have a form of ID other then their driver's license.
They must also turn the form into a post office, county court house or passport agency. Two photos must also be taken to go with passports. Even though passports cannot be obtained anywhere on campus the Wright1 Card Center takes passport photos.
Ballentine explained that passports can be very expensive.
According to a passport applicant, the total cost of a passport for individuals 16 and over is $97.
Ballentine also said, "Students should also be advised to do research before traveling anywhere to find out if a temporary visa is required because a passport must be obtained before a temporary visa and a temporary visa can take several weeks."
Students seem to think the new passport law is a positive thing. Caitlin Omness, a freshman majoring in early childhood education, said, "The new passport law is a good thing because it means we have more security."
Erin Kelly, a freshman majoring in modern languages, said, "I think it is a good thing because it limits the amount of drug trafficking."
