This past weekend marked the 40th anniversary of WSU and Parents Weekend, which allowed parents to participate in activities and see their children in their home away from home.

One of the most publicized events that took place this weekend was the speech made by NBC's Today Show feature correspondent, Mike Leonard. Leonard recently wrote a book called The Ride of Our Lives: Roadside Lessons of an American Family. He was inspired to write the book after taking his aging parents and three of his four adult children to see their old neighborhood and numerous other places one last time.

Leonard emphasized throughout his speech that even though it may seem like the book is just about a road trip it is actually about those small moments that make a big difference in your life. This was the main message of Leonard's speech, which seemed to be well received by the audience.

Among the other events that took place this weekend were a signing of Mike Leonard book, a fireside chat, a basketball game, a Monte Carlo Night and a breakfast with university president, Dr. David R. Hopkins. Many people attended Leonard's speech and the other various events. In fact, so many attended the basket ball against Butler, the 10th team in the nation, that it was sold out. The basket ball team successfully beat Butler 76-65.

Katie Deedrick, one of the coordinators of Parents' Weekend, said, "The weekend was a success." She also stated that "the benefit of having a parent's weekend is that it allows parents to see students in their natural habitat."
Students agreed with Deedrick.

Kiana Hoepf, a freshman majoring in organizational leadership, said, "My mom did not really like the speech, but enjoyed parents weekend overall."

Erin Kelly, a freshman majoring in modern languages, said, "My mom and I really enjoyed spending time together over Parents Weekend."
