For graduate students who choose to come to Wright State, there is an opportunity to receive a full-time or part-time scholarship for three quarters.

That was the case for Michael Mills, a graduate in computer science and engineering, and Rob Anderson, a graduate in public administration.

After attending an open house held by Wright State's School of Graduate Studies in November, both Mills and Anderson were awarded scholarships.

Mills, a senior electronic engineer at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base for 35 years, received a tuition award for $5,000 as a part-time student. Anderson, who is a planner with the City of Kettering, received a full-time tuition of $9,000.

Both explained that their names were entered into a drawing at the open house and that they were notified afterwards.

Anderson said he thought he didn't receive the award because he wasn't notified until last month, and the open house was in November. Mills joked that he was happy enough to receive a free mug at the open house.

"I was very surprised," said Mills. "I appreciate and thank Wright State University for it."

"Winning the scholarship is sort of a blessing and a curse," said Anderson. "The blessing is that the schooling is free, and the curse is that now I can take more classes, which, with a full-time job, makes it a little more difficult."

The School of Graduate Studies has held three open houses: in June, August and November of last year. Assistant Dean and Director of Graduate Admissions and Records, Jerry Malicki, said that the drawing does not take place at every open house.

Explaining how the drawing works, Malicki said that those who have applied for admissions and attend the open house automatically have their names placed in the drawing. The drawing doesn't take place at the open house, but instead, someone who is not a part of the staff at the School of Graduate Studies picks out the names.

He added that the scholarships have been given out in two of the three drawings, explaining that it depends if there are any scholarships still available.

The next graduate open house will take place on Thursday, April 20 at the Apollo Room in Student Union. Attendees who have applied for admission for fall quarter 2006 by the deadline of July 21, 2006 will have the chance to be picked for a full-time or part-time tuition award.
