Ideas for next year from the new editor

Issue date: 6/4/08 Section: Opinions
Late Tuesdays, short deadlines, missing class for breaking news, stress, angry readers-I can't wait to take over next year. As news editor, I've already experienced all these things, but I've always had the chief to ask for help and advice. As nerve-wracking as it will be, next year we'll take all the new ideas started this year further, continuing the positive direction already started. Hopefully, I won't mess it up.
The new ideas for next year include a student organization news page, student profiles, Wright Life Freebie Patrol, a "Spotted This Week on Campus" photo page, a monthly activities calendar, weekly music and movie reviews and athletes of the week. These content ideas are community driven so students can know whom The Guardian staff is and learn about their fellow students.
There will also be some layout changes. On the cover of every issue will be a student, either as the subject, or illustrating the cover story, to further the tabloid format. The "Spotted This Week on Campus" photo page in the Wright Life section will replace the photo-in-cut, the random photo traditionally on page two. Page four will be dedicated to student organization news, including Student Government, the big six organizations and one small organization every week.
For all campus departments and organizations, advertising prices have been reduced to accommodate budget cuts. New advertisement spots include the cover, Crime Notes, "Spotted This Week on Campus", the monthly activities calendar and online spots.
Off the paper ideas include another presidential debate before elections, a pumpkin carving contest, photography and writing contests and contests like who can find the most mistakes in The Guardian.
Maybe these changes aren't significant, but all of these ideas are efforts to better serve students, and at least gets the staff excited. If you don't like what you're hearing, or if you do, please let us know. This school year is almost over and I look forward to a fresh start in the fall.
