Homecoming weekend was kicked off in a suitable fashion by the Wright State women's soccer team who continued their dominance last weekend with 2 players also setting their place in WSU athletic history. In front of a rowdy crowd of over 700 at Alumni Field, the Raiders took on the rival Butler Bulldogs to set the campus' homecoming festivities on their way. The game was largely defensive, with only 1 goal being scored in the match but WSU freshman Amber Kasmer made sure that goal counted for the home team. This game also began the second half of Wright State's season, made up entirely of Horizon League opponents. Most of the first half was played scoreless until the 26:00 marker when Kasmer took a pass from junior Jess Rooma to beat Butler's keeper one-on-one for her fourth tally of the year. The freshman forward has had no problem finding the net lately scoring in the team's last 4 games. "I've finally started placing some shots instead of just slamming them," Kasmer notes on her recent scoring streak. The pass gave Rooma her second assist of the year as well, giving her a tie for the team's lead. The rest of the game, the Raider defense held the Bulldog offense to only a single shot on-goal and only 3 shots to Wright State's 10. The win put freshman goalkeeper Meghan Hackerson into tenth place on Wright State's single-season shutout list with 5. While the crowd at alumni field was excited and stayed at top-volume for most of the contest, Kasmer had no problem staying focused saying, "I just block it all out." With their first league game a success, the team moved on to fellow HL foes the Cleveland State Vikings at home on Sunday afternoon. The women once again proved their dominance, winning a lopsided 4-0 victory. Goals weren't the only category the Green & Gold crushed CSU in either, out-shooting them 26-6 and taking the corner kick category 8-1. The opening half saw 2 goals from Wright State, the first coming at 13 minutes in when Amy Miller scored her sixth goal of the season. With this goal, team-scoring leader Miller also moved into tenth place in the school's all-time scoring list with 16. In Sunday's game however, it seemed like everybody on the team got a tally with 4 different players scoring. Also scoring were Amber Kasmer, Nicole Amador and Stephanie Habner got her first maker of 2007. Knowing the Horizon League schedule can make or break a season, coach Pat Ferguson commented, "the gap between teams is even so [our players] have to be ready to battle for 90 minutes." The Raiders now prepare for a 4-game road trip kicking off Friday with Detroit and rounding out against Milwaukee on Oct 28.
